Sorry for the lack of real posts, I’ve been on a bit of a blogging break. For one thing I haven’t been to a game since Inter league play in June, and for another I’ve been busy at work. There have been some things I’ve wanted to rant about, but I just haven’t been able to get around to sitting down and writing. Until now.
So first things first. Pitching.
Kuroda keeps getting worse and worse, Kershaw continually has rocky starts but has been better at getting through the first couple innings, Wolf has been pitching better than most thought he would, and Billingsley can’t seem to get his 10th win. Our bullpen has been pretty solid but with Broxton continually being hurt I’m getting nervous about the playoffs. ESPECIALLY if Halladay gets traded to an NL rival in contention. Can we survive the playoffs without another solid starting arm? Lets say the season ends right now - first we play the Cardinals or the Phillies, then we play the winner of the other division series which at this point would most likely be the Giants. In a 5 game series and they come at us with Lincecum, Cain, Zito, and Johnson we’re going to have to be offensively unstoppable. We need arms, bad.
Second, Fans.
Look I’m a Dodger fan too and there are asshole fans for every team, but when I go to other stadiums I try to act as an ambassador to the blue. I heard on a sports podcast or radio show or some other that Dodger fans are the second worst fans in baseball, I can’t remember who was first but the point is this. If people in the visiting team’s jersey are being respectful to you, be respectful to them. It’s the least you could ask for while going to see the Dodgers in another park, so pay the same respect. Don’t shout “PHILLIES SUUUUUCK!” at a 10 year old girl in a Phillies jersey, just… don’t do it. A little friendly ribbing back and forth is fine, but if someone is respectfully cheering for their team, let them be. Now if they are being obnoxious and talking shit and provoking the crowd behind them with every hit their team gets, by all means throw some peanuts at them. Kate and I went to Angel stadium last month for Weaver vs. Weaver and I was SHOCKED at the behavior of Dodger fans. They were running up and down the isles, throwing things, disobeying ushers, it was madness. I realize I am speaking to a minority of Dodger fans, but I feel like I’m treated with much more respect in opposing parks than we treat our fellow baseball fans.
Third, Radio.
KABC - can we please figure out a way to have Vin Scully all 9 innings? Charley Steiner is painful to listen to. He called the game as over when Broxton blew his save in San Diego, he continually screams into the mic excitedly when opposing teams make defensive plays or hit home runs, he’s just hard to listen to. And while he was gone for the Brewers games Rick Monday rambled so much he would just stop calling the game while getting fixed on talking about one pointless uninteresting statistical fact. Now, I love Rick but there was one inning where he EXCITEDLY announced a Brewers base hit RBI and then casually announced a Dodgers home run the next inning. Who are you working for Rick? That’s all. I think we need more play by play men who were raised loving the game but were never MLB players. This article with an old Red Barber interview on how Vin Scully was found and ended up being the Dodgers play by play man is fascinating. May you live forever Vin Scully.
A few random final thoughts for anyone in the Dodgers front offices.
1. Please stop putting shitty Hollywood people on “This Is My Town” billboards.
2. If you are going to have people design officially licensed Dodgers clothing, please have it be someone other than Alyssa Milano.
3. I’ve noticed a lot of parks have started lighting off fireworks after every Home Run by the home team. Please, please, please don’t ever start doing that. Ever.
4. Kate says the girls bathrooms on top deck get so disgusting by the 4th inning she wont even use them anymore. Maybe one janitorial round in the middle of the game? Just saying.
Well I guess that’s it. I’ll be back in my seats tonight for the beginning of the second half.
Let’s go Dod-gers! ::clap clap clapclapclap::
