1958 Topps Don Newcombe
I don’t know what’s going on with Don’s arm and leg on this card. Some sketchy 50’s production value. The back is pretty amazing though, even with the missing piece of cardboard.

Anyone who’s been to more than a few Dodger games has probably seen Newk around the stadium, sharply dressed in a suit and hat. One of my favorite Dodgers of all time, he’s apparently been a huge influence on Matt Kemp, who is one of my other favorites.

Babe as coach of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Like the Boston Braves, the Dodgers had no intention of letting Babe take over as manager; they simply wanted to use him to boost their attendance - 1938.

Matt Kemp’s 39 homers in 39 seconds. Via Vin Scully is my Homeboy.

This is hypnotic.
It’s looking pretty grim for Kemp’s chances at the Triple Crown, which is a shame. He’d pretty much have to go 4 for 4 the next 2 games with Braun and Reyes having some 0 for days. However, Kemp’s pre-season goal was 40-40 and he’s obviously been swinging for the fences, so I’m hoping he can hit 2 in the last two games. (Photo : AP)

A couple more and I’m done. I swear.

These have been posted everywhere but they still crack me up every year.

Happy birthday Tommy!
Can’t wait to see you back in Dodger blue (it really brings out your eyes).

1953 Topps Roy Campanella
I was going to save this, to space out my “Dodgers Retired Numbers” posts. Instead I’m posting it in honor of Matt Kemp winning the Roy Campanella award.

Campy came up to play for the Dodgers the year after Jackie Robinson in 1948. He went to the All Star game every season except for his first and his last. He won the NL MVP award three times, the last time he won was the Dodgers first World Series Championship. A tragic auto accident cut his career short, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down. His number, 39, was retired by the Dodgers in 1972.

In 1953 Topps released their second baseball card set, and this year the entire set was hand painted, no photographs. Ever since I saw Campy’s card, I knew I had to have it. It’s absolutely beautiful. Recently I saw this one, in decent condition, mislabeled as “1959 Roy Campanella” and ended up winning the auction for less than half of what this card would normally fetch in this condition. Awesome right?

I have this friend who’s a Giants fan & when she went into work this morning her two coworkers left this on her desk.

Normally I’d say it’s not nice to rub a victory in people’s faces, after all the shit I got from Giants fan friends last year… I support this.

Congrats Clayton! I’m so tired from staying up, but it was worth it.

Here is a video of a sleepy black lab dressed as Eric Gagne, obviously jeff992)

I personally don’t think Kershaw was intentionally trying to hit Parra last night. His reaction spoke 1000 words to me, and that’s the problem. Mattingly needs to have a talk about Kershaw keeping his outward emotions in check. Screaming at Parra fromt he dugout the night before was the wrong move, if he hadn’t done that he COULD have intentionally drilled him and only gotten a warning to both benches. Instead he was immediately ejected. Which would have been warranted if it had been an obvious between the numbers drilling, but it wasn’t. Does Welke think Kershaw really wanted to jeopardize a win, his chances at the Cy Young, and a suspension just for a retaliation? He should have warned him about coming inside and that should have been that. Oh well, It was a fun game to watch, I’m just glad the bullpen was able to hold it down for Kershaw. With Elimination coming up, Kershaw’s next starts, and Kemp’s every day performance are still making the games worth tuning in to. Oh yeah, and Vin, I will always tune in to hear Vin Scully.

The Dodger fan in me hates the thought of this. The graphic designer in me thinks it is beautiful and clever.

1960 Topps Walter Alston.
In my quest to pick up a card from every Dodger with a retired number (so far you’ve seen number 19 Jim Gilliam, and number 32 Sandy Koufax) I picked up this amazing Walter Alston (retired number 24) card for 99 cents.
Sure it’s missing a few bits of cardboard, and there’s a smudge on the “S” but this card is in PERFECT condition as far as I’m concerned.
Sure the base 1960 Topps design is pretty, perfectly showing a transition in design style from the 50’s to the 60’s, but the manager cards from that year are just damn near perfect vertical artwork in a horizontal set. The pendants, the hand colored black & white photos, the cyan and red alternating letters. They might be one of my favorite Topps designs of all time. I’m so glad that I have a smiling Walter Alston to add to my collection.
